Hullo and welcome to my blog!
I’m Dina, daughter of Georgia and the late Charalambos – courageous, very much in love, hard-working immigrants from Greece who settled in South Africa in the late 1950’s. I’m mom to 2 dogs, Allegra (a purebred German Shepherd Dog) and Bruno (a mixed breed rescue special).
My mother has vascular dementia and I have been her primary caregiver since December 2012.
We live in one of Johannesburg’s oldest and most characterful suburbs. My closest tribe is scattered around the globe: my wonderful sister and brother-in-law, my utterly delightful nieces and my most intimate friends are to be found in far off lands, such as Australia, the United Kingdom and Greece.
It has not been difficult caring for mom. Until now.
I’ve started this blog because sometimes I wonder whether I’m the demented one. Mother and I have embarked on a challenging roller-coaster ride, with her as conductor. I have no idea what each day will bring. Often, it’s very lonely. Sometimes I want to bolt!
Perhaps you feel the same? I hope you will join me on my journey of dementia discoveries and share your experiences in the Comments.
